Before you choose a report
Three useful checks for Scania
Keep the full VIN
Copy the complete identifier from the vehicle. If a service asks for a shorter chassis number, follow its own instructions; keep the full VIN for registration and report enquiries.
Check the finished vehicle
Ask for the chassis specification and the bodybuilder’s documents. Compare the actual body, axle arrangement and documented permitted weights with the registration.
Read its working history
Match service and inspection records to the VIN. Review recorded mileage and operating hours together where available; a specification lookup does not establish condition.
Where to find your Scania VIN
Compare the complete VIN on the vehicle and registration. Use model-specific Scania documentation for the marking location. A chassis number, engine number and VIN are not interchangeable inputs for every service.
Open Scania technical information ↗Quick answers
Can I use a short Scania chassis number everywhere?
No. Different Scania services request different identifiers. Keep the complete VIN and follow the input instructions of the official service you are using.
Will a basic decoder identify the fitted body or conversion?
Do not assume so. Obtain vehicle-specific chassis information and separate documentation for the completed body and later alterations. Scania technical services may require paid access.

Compare the identifiers before you buy
Copy the identifier from the vehicle itself and compare it character for character with the registration and seller’s paperwork. Use the owner’s manual for the precise location on that model; dashboard, body-label and chassis locations vary. Stop and resolve any mismatch before paying for a history search.
Use Scania’s chassis-specific documentation
Scania explains that its workshop information can retrieve vehicle specifications by chassis number. It also notes that the factory record may exclude bodywork not supplied by Scania. Compare the chassis identifier with the registration and request the completed body’s documentation separately.
Review the actual truck or bus configuration
Verify axle arrangement, permitted weights, fitted equipment and subsequent alterations against the relevant certificates and invoices. Request maintenance and inspection records with matching identifiers. A specification describes documented configuration; it cannot establish the condition of the body, operating hours or the completeness of the vehicle’s commercial history.
Limits to keep in mind
- VIN decoding identifies available specification data; accident, mileage, theft and ownership records require separate evidence and depend on the provider and country.
- NHTSA vPIC uses manufacturer submissions for the US regulatory system. International, low-volume and older vehicles may return incomplete results; an empty field is not proof that a vehicle is fraudulent.
- Historical chassis and frame numbers may not fit a modern 17-character VIN form. Preserve the identifier exactly as recorded on original documents.

From VIN details to a buying decision
Match the identifiers and documents, then investigate the countries where the vehicle was used. Read our cross-border guide or start with US records where relevant. Specifications do not establish current condition.
Compare report providers and use the viewing checklist.
